Physical Description: Bed bugs are small, with an oval shaped rear section and segmented abdomen. They have a set of vestigal wings towards the front of their body. Younger bed bugs are more translucent than adults and are lighter in color. Bed bugs abdomens turn a bright red after they have recently gorged.

Bed Bug Issues

Bed bug bites are the primary issue caused to humans by these tiny parasites. Bed bug bites may result in skin rashes and may cause allergic reactions. Bed bug bites can often be determined by the large red welts left in the affected area, with multiple bites occuring close together. Bed bugs have been known to carry certain human diseases, but are not known to be able to transmit these diseases.

Signs of an Infestation

A bed bug infestation can be detected several different ways. Bed bugs themselves tend to go unseen since they are both very small and nocturnal, usually coming out when people are going to sleep. Often people notice a number of red marks, usually clumped together, on their skin caused by bed bug bites. Small dark spots of feces can been seen, especially around the nest area. There may also be red spotting as well, indicating blood smears from the bug's feeding. Finally, bed bugs molt, leaving behind their exoskeletons.

Removal

Once the nest area is discovered, bed bugs can be removed by simply vacuuming them up. This is usually done in conjunction with heat treating or drying where the bed is heated to 113°F for an hour or cooled to 1°F for up to two hours. There are a number of pesticides that are toxic to bed bugs, but many of them are also harmful to humans, especially children and are not recommended for use.
